1 | Who was the witness? | John 1:32 | RJJ | 113450
Greetings every one. There seems that the old arguments never go away, so instead of adding to the fires of debate, may I ask, what to some would say, is a simple question, "at the baptism of our Lord, who heard the voice of God, and saw the Holy Spirit descending?" SHALOM,RJJ |

2 | Who was the witness? | John 1:32 | Emmaus | 113451
RJJ, John the Baptist in John ( although Jesus baptism itself is not described), Jesus in Mark and Matthew. Luke just asserts the facts not who saw or heard, although the voice spoke to Jesus saying "you." Emmaus |

3 | Who was the witness? | John 1:32 | Ray | 113468
Hi Emmaus, This is a question that must have been discussed through the years because there are variations in the manuscripts for these passages. For example, some manuscripts have for Matthew 3:16, "the heavens were opened to Him and He saw..."; which is reflected in the NKJ version. The NASB for Matthew 3:16 based on their manuscripts chose to translate it "the heavens were opened, and he saw..." Both versions, in their marginal notes give alternate readings of [Or, He] and [Or, he]. The NASB's first choice for their text is "he saw" because it agrees with "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." But as one who has been interested in capitalization and counting of pronouns is concerned, may I offer my personal interpretation for consideration? Matthew 3:16, agreeing with the NASB, "And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him. 17 (going with the Literal alternate reading in the NASB margin) 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, "This is My Son, the Beloved, in whom (I) am well pleased." Mark 1:10, "And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; 11 and a voice came out of the heavens: "Thou art My Son, the (Beloved), in Thee I am well-pleased." Luke 3:21, "Now it came about when all the people were baptized, that Jesus also was baptized, and while (He) was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "Thou art My Son, the Beloved. In Thee (I) am well-pleased." But the bottom line of all of the gospels is that Jesus is the One; the Son of God. John 1:33, "I did not recognize Him, but (He) who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes..."
