1 | John's death | John 1:1 | catfish3 | 213827
Is there any proof that they tried to boil John in oil before they exiled him to Patmos? I know that there is no scripture for this but someone wrote it in a book. Is there any history of this and who wrote it.
2 | John's death | John 1:1 | MJH | 213829
According to Tertullian (in The Prescription of Heretics) John was banished (presumably to Patmos) after being plunged into boiling oil in Rome and suffering nothing from it. It is said that the entire coliseum were converted to Christianity upon witnessing this miracle. Josephus wrote too early to have included this event. I am NOT suggesting that this is an historically accurate statement, just answering your question without additional comment. MJH |

3 | John's death | John 1:1 | CDBJ | 213834
Hi MJH, This confirms what you suggest even though it is extrabiblical. Fox’s Book of Martrys XVI. John The “beloved disciple,” was brother to James the Great. The churches of Smyrna, Pergamos, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, and Thyatira, were founded by him. From Ephesus he was ordered to be sent to Rome, where it is affirmed he was cast into a cauldron of boiling oil. He escaped by miracle, without injury. Domitian afterwards banished him to the Isle of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Nerva, the successor of Domitian, recalled him. He was the only apostle who escaped a violent death. Have a great day, CDBJ |
