scjm, Physically because the periocadial sac arounfd the heart accumulated fluid when one died from crucifixion as a result of asphyxiation through exhaustion. Spiritually interpreted it is like the water which flowed from the rock in the desert in Numbers 20:10-13. In the palestinian Targum, an Aramaic version of the Old Testament, blood and water flowed from the rock. See also 1 Cor 10:4. Other interpretations of the blood and water which flow from the side of Christ are that they represent baptism and the eucharist or that they represent the baptism by water and the baptism of blood suffered by the martyrs. In researching the covenant established by God is Gen 15 I found what appears to be a connection between the OT sacrifice and this verse. Ref: Heb 9:13 and Num 19:9 Jesus is represented by the Red Heifer - His blood and His water were comingled for our purification from all sin. Just an observation that you might want to consider. Blessings, mommapbs |
