So, what do we need to "know [about] God" to avoid the penalty and be saved?
2 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | peacebestill | 208483
Odaat John 3:16-19 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. What we need to know about God to avoid the penalty is; First Jesus is God. Second whoever believes in Jesus will be granted eternal life. Third whoever does not believe in Jesus has been judged already. But there is more. Peter the apostle was preaching to the Jews about who Jesus was; that He was God and that God ordained for Him to be crucufied by the Jews, and that Jesus, unlike King David arose from the dead to be seated next to God in heaven. Then the Jews repented and asked what must we do to be saved? Acts 2:38Peter siad to them, Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgivness of your sins; and you will recieve the gift of the Holy Spirit. Four repent of your sins. Five be baptized into the body of Christ. There is more. Romans 10:9, 10 That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Six make the fact that you believe Jesus is God a confession out loud that you do because confession results in salvation. This is not meant to be a list, a chronological list, of how to get saved, because the belief and confession of Jesus as God, Lord can be all at once, and because confession should come before baptism. peacebestill |

3 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | jamison | 208485
Let's not forget to keep all the commandments as well as sell all we have and give to the poor!!! (Matt 19:16-26 and Mark 10:17-27 and Luke 18:18-27). We have to do this to inherit eternal life. Also you have to accept Jesus as your Saviour. I can't find verses for that one, sorry. jamison |

4 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | azurelaw | 208486
Dear Jamison, Please note the scriptures you cited DO NOT say you will inherit ETERNAL LIFE by doing such and such. They say: "...you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Luke 18:22) "...and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Mark 20:21) "...and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." (Mat 19:21) The context of the scripture is that Jesus was refuting the mindset of the young man who asked "...what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?". He hoped to obtain eternal life or salvation through good work, which in contrast to the doctrines of Grace and salvation through faith alone. Observe that Jesus told him to "follow me". Did the 12 apostles sell what they have before they follow Christ? No. They just follow Him determinedly. Read Roman 10:9-10. Shalom Azure |

5 | What do we need to know about God | John 17:3 | jamison | 208487
Hello Azure, Come on now, you will have to do better than that to refute these verses:). First - the man asked how to inherit eternal life. It stands to reason that Jesus answered his question. However, if you don't think that he did, then telling him that he would have treasure in heaven seems to say the same thing, right? Do the unsaved have treasure in heaven? Can anyone have treasure in heaven and not have eternal life? Second, do you know the apostles didn't sell all they had? I don't see the Scriptures say that anywhere which means that it is speculation and that is not allowed here:). Come on now, you have been here a long time. Step outside the box of standard theology and tell me why this is not a requirement. The jailer asked Paul what he had to do to be saved and Paul answered "Believe" and we go with it. A man asks Jesus what he must do to be saved (am I correct in assuming that inheriting eternal life and being saved are the same?) and He answers and we don't go with it. Tell you what, let's put away the commandments for now and just go with sell all you have. Jesus said there was only one thing he lacked. What was that one thing? Was it selling all he had or was it following Jesus or was it something else? jamison |

jamison- may I recommend that you reread Azure's post. You wrote: "it stands to reason that Jesus answered his question". The point here is that attempting to reason without considering context is not a ratinoal approach when trying to discern the message. Consider some important points here including the following. 1. The man confessed to have followed the commandments since his youth. Answer: We know, as did Christ, that this was an impossibility. 2. Was Jesus telling the man that following the commandments and then selling all he had and distributing it to the poor would earn him Heanen? Answer, if you believe that then you rule out that salvation is through Christ and Him alone. One would be advocating salvation by works. Jesus asked the young man an important question. "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone". That's the beginning of the immediate context. Christ then refers to the law, which no man can fully keep. Continue to consider the context. The young ruler never misses a beat. In his own praise of himself he confesses to have kept the law. Christ knew better of course, so why the statement about the man's riches? Was Jesus giving the man a formula for salvation? 1. Follow these commandments. 2. Sell everything you own. 3. Distribute the profits of your sell to the poor. 4. Follow me Of course not and there is no way to rationally draw that conclusion from scripture. Christ was not telling the man how to get to Heaven. He was clearly showing the man the condition of his own heart. He was self-righteous and not willing to part from his earthly riches. Even if Heaven were available to him for a price (which it was and is not), the man was not willing to pay it. By the way, if we "step outside the box of standard theology.." where do you think we would be standing??? Isn't that a dangerous and scary place to go? God bless, Jeff |

Dear Jeff, "Christ was not telling the man how to get to Heaven. He was clearly showing the man the condition of his own heart. He was self-righteous and not willing to part from his earthly riches. Even if Heaven were available to him for a price (which it was and is not), the man was not willing to pay it." Excellent point. Thank you. You have explained much much better than I did. Actually Azure, you explained it fine. Your post was easily understandable when read with a basic understanding of "standard theology". Assuming we're talking about orthodox Christian doctrine of course. Jeff |
