1 | What does it mean "not of the world"? | John 17:16 | julcol87 | 226688
What does Jesus mean in this verse? I understand it a little, but does "not being part of this world," refer to everything that is evil, wrongdoing, not of God, and does that include Holidays/Birthdays, etc.... ? Thanks Julia |

2 | What does it mean "not of the world"? | John 17:16 | Makarios | 226689
Greetings Julia! You asked, "What does it mean 'not of the world'"? If you are a Christian, do you ever think of yourself as a missionary, right where you are? If you are a Christian, you are and should be different from those who simply watch life pass by or use life for the attainment of things. Instead of being in that mold, you should be in 'Christ's mold'! That is, that you have something (or Someone) within you that seeks to be, in every way, a part of Christ, but must remain here on earth to accomplish His purpose. You are truly unique as a Christian! Church is one place designed to take your focus off the world, even for a few minutes, so that you can focus on that 'other world' (or God), and then we go back out into the world again to do His will, and then do it all over again the following week. When Christ 'breaks' into the life of a person, it is the single most important life-changing event in that person's life! And we must make all preparation in prayer so that the conditions for such an event taking place are at their fullest; in short, we must pray for an 'out of this world' occurrence - that the Holy Spirit intervenes, and possibly uses us to carry and deliver His message. Blessings to you, Makarios |

4 | What about holidays, birthdays, etc.? | John 17:16 | Makarios | 226709
Greetings Julia, I apologize; you were asking if "not being part of this world" included Holidays and Birthdays, etc.. It was actually written in the Law of the Lord (2 Chronicles 2:4; 8:13; 31:3) that festivals and celebrations be offered continually (1 Chronicles 23:31) before the Lord (Ezekiel 46:3). In the New Testament, Colossians 2:16 says, "Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day--" so that no one could act as a judge in regards to these types of things. Now, there are people who do not feel comfortable taking part in certain elements of Holidays, such as Halloween, or drinking during New Years, or getting caught up in all of the commercialism of Christmas. But I have always considered that as a matter of personal conscience: even though Col. 2:16 indicates that we are free from being judged by other believers for partaking in such Holidays, we may not be free from the judgment of the Holy Spirit inside of us (1 Cor. 6:12). So, if the Holy Spirit is leading you to abstain from certain elements of Holidays, then no one can judge you from abstaining from them either. I pray that this helps! Blessings to you, Makarios |

Hi, Tam... Welcome to the forum! The Bible would not contain particulars on a holiday like this that had origins at least a millennium after the last book of the New Testament was penned. You might check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween In Him, Doc |
