John 15:19 and John 3:16 are talking about the same world. John 17:11-12 is talking about the physical world like Earth. Jesus was saying that after he leaves we would still be here in the physical world and that God would keep us from evil instead of taking us out of the physical world. Then it changes to the world that the first two scriptures were talking about. Since satan is the prince of this "world system" people that abide under him are called the world or the unsaved. Then there are the people who have accepted Christ and we have come out of the "world system" to the freedom and liberty in Christ. John 3:16 is telling us how God loved the people that were in bondage of the world system that he gave his son Jesus to die for our sins so that who ever accpeted this sacrifice could come out of the system into liberty. I hope this helps and maybe some of the others can give more clarity.

HeirofGod, Thanks for the response. I don't want to misunderstand anything you are stating, so please correct me if I am wrong. I'm assuming your conclusion is that in John 3:16, the word "world" should be interpreted as "all humans without exception" and this would refer to all humans from Adam until the end of the world and would include every soul in the grave (or hell) at this time and every human ever mentioned in scripture. Is that correct? Sam Hughey |

I fail to read anything into the meaning of "world" besides just plain "earth". This passage is part of Jesus' high priestly prayer not long before he was led to the cross. He knew he was destined soon to be "no longer in the world."
