1 | Jn 14:14 Why "ask Me," instead of "ask" | John 14:14 | mark d seyler | 171890
Hi Tim, Something you said intrigued me. You wrote that there is historical evidence that the Byzantine texts were "standardized". Would that be akin to what we have done in the modern day, in an effort to produce a text as much like the original as we believe possible? Have we not collected mss. and from them produced a couple of versions of "standardized" texts? What are your thoughts on that? Love in Christ, Mark |

2 | Jn 14:14 Why "ask Me," instead of "ask" | John 14:14 | Morant61 | 171893
Greetings Mark! These are two entirely different situations. Allow me to explain. The modern ecclectic Greek text uses the evidence of all the available manuscripts to try and determine what the original text (which we do not have) actually said. However, the texts themselves are left as is. Many of the Byzantine texts were actually altered to say what another text said, thus corrupting the text itself. It should be clear that there is a difference between the two practices. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dear Brother Tim, John Gill refers from time to time to things like the "Ethiopic" and "Arabic" versions, etc. Were these Greek texts? In Him, Doc |

4 | Jn 14:14 Why "ask Me," instead of "ask" | John 14:14 | Morant61 | 171909
Greetings Doc! If I remember correctly, they would be early 'regional' translations. Some of these early versions are actually older than many of the extant Greek texts. So, by looking at them, one can find evidence concerning what the earliest Greek texts actually said. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dear Brother Tim, You say "translations." So they were translations from the Greek into another language? Would you be able to direct me to a source (on-line or otherwise) where I could find particulars about these "versions." In Him, Doc |

6 | Jn 14:14 Why "ask Me," instead of "ask" | John 14:14 | Morant61 | 171911
Greetings Doc! Yes, they were translations of the Greek into Arabaic, Ethiopian, Latin, ect... The dates have a wide range. Here is a link to a web page that I just found about textual criticism in general. It includes some info about versions as well. Here is the link: http://www.skypoint.com/(tilde)waltzmn/intro.html Note: Replace (tilde) with the actual tilde symbol. p.s. - Hank, there are some interesting examples from Shakesphere in this article. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
