1 | Where is the true translation? | John 12:7 | n.m.i.c. | 162020
Is this the true translation of Lord Jesus Christ's words? When I read the words as are written in many translations of the Holy bible and my own copies here at home, I instinctively knew Lord Jesus would NEVER had said to "leave her alone", Our Lord Jesus's nature is to draw to Him. Christ didn't say that even to satan. So ( thank the Lord for bible gateway resource)I researched the different tranclations of John 12:7 and found in Young's literal translation "suffer her" I understand this to mean -put up with her- This meaning is very different from "leave her alone" careless words can change the meaning of sentences. I told my feelings to my 12 year old daughter and her attitude was "so what! It's just words and leave her alone means.......( thnking process!)....leave her alone! In the battle between good and evil , a daily occurence, people are led , deceived, tricked into believing they are ALONE separated from God , no one to help them. That is often the aim of satan - to separate us from the love of God , or to trick us into thinking that. Our souls are susceptable to very subtle influences which sometimes go unnoticed. As Christians we must strive to stick as close as we can to Lord Jesus Christ and trust in Him, not our own selves. Can anyone tell me if in much earlier versions of King James translation (earlier than the current one)the words in John12:7 were translated as "suffer her"? |

2 | Where is the true translation? | John 12:7 | kalos | 162034
The true translation is in the KJV, NKJV, ASV, NASB, ESV, NIRV, etc. John 12:4-8 NIRV (New International Reader's Version) But Judas Iscariot didn't like what Mary did. He was one of Jesus' disciples. Later he was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Judas said, 5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold? Why wasn't the money given to poor people? It was worth a year's pay." 6 He didn't say this because he cared about the poor. He said it because he was a thief. Judas was in charge of the money bag. He used to help himself to what was in it. 7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "The perfume was meant for the day I am buried. 8 You will always have the poor among you. But you won't always have me." Here Jesus is not saying, "Abandon her"; "Give up on her"; "Turn her over to a reprobate mind" or any such thing. He is not saying about Mary what was said about Ephraim (Hosea 4:17 (ESV) Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone.) He is not saying anything like "Mary is joined to idols; leave her alone." A proper understanding of this text is not so much a matter of which translation you use. Rather it is a matter of reading and understanding verse 7 in the immediate context. Judas is criticizing Mary. Jesus is saying, in effect, Don't criticize her. Leave her alone to go ahead and do what she intended to do. You are right when you write: '...I instinctively knew Lord Jesus would NEVER had said to "leave her alone"'. You are correct. Jesus was not saying, "Just walk away from her. Abandon her. Just leave her alone." You write that in Young's literal translation "suffer her" you "understand this to mean -put up with her". The way the word suffer is used in the KJV does not mean to put up with or to endure. In the King James and other versions of the Bible suffer means "to allow, to permit". Many of the words in the KJV have had their meaning changed or even reversed from what those words meant 400 years ago. Neither "leave her alone" nor "suffer her" are careless words. Jesus didn't speak and translators didn't use careless words in this verse. Grace to you, Kalos |
