1 | why is mary anointing christ said first | John 11:2 | rosegirl | 187911
I don't under stand how John can mention Mary in John chapter 11:2 as the one who anointed christ with perfume when it didn't take place until after Lazarus was raised from the dead. Also Luke has a slightly different version of the story saying two days before the passover where John says it was six.

Greetings Rosegirl! Excellent questions! First of all, John 11:2 is not recording that the event took place prior to the resurrection of Lazarus. It is simply identifying Mary by mentioning one of the most famous events in her life. It would be like me writing a story about Dan Marino's childhood, and mentioning that Peyton Manning would eventually break his single season record for touchdown passes. (Sorry about the sports analogy, but it is the NFL draft day) :-) Secondly, John 12:1-2 does not say that the dinner was given six days before the passover. It simply says that Jesus arrived in Bethany six days prior to the passover. The dinner is mentioned in the next verse, but no 'time' element is included in it. I hope this helps! Greetings Brother Tim! This is an excellent post! The way the question was ask and the gracious way in which it was answered speaks volumes in my opinion. Sorry my opinion doesn't count for much but that's all I have to offer :-) I have a lot of it though ;-) There is much more taught in this little interaction then just the answers that were given. Praise God! Great example Brother! Your Brother in Christ, Steve |
