Greetings Sweet, You are close but these verses have a deeper meaning than that. If you read verse 8 it tells you that the disciples were worried about Jesus going back to Judea where the Jews wanted to stone Him. If you stay in context it is then referring to Jesus remaining safe. Jesus said as long as He performed His Father's will (during the daylight period of His ministry) He was safe. But soon the time would come when His earthly work would end according to God's plan of redemption and Jesus would "stumble" into darkness. Jesus was telling them that as long as He was doing His Father's work, even this late in His ministry, He was safe and no harm would come to Him no matter where He went. prayon | ||||||

Hi prayon, I don't see any way that Jesus would "stumble" into darkness. I think that sweet was on the right track when she spoke of our need to walk in His light as He does enlighten us; and also that we should not sin. I find it noteworthy that the NASB does not capitalize "Light" here in John 11:9,10. Although it is capitalized in John 9:5, "While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." Personally, I want to be consistent in that regard so I have both Light occurances capitalized. Like I have said, I can not see Jesus stumbling in John 11:10 because He is the Light. If one is in need of seeing Jesus in the likeness of men, this passage of John 11:7-15 may possibly hold an example. In verse 7 Jesus is included with other men and is in the lower case. In verse 7 Jesus says, "Let us go to Judea again." In verse 11 He says, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep." In verse 15 He says, "...but let us go to him." One of the places where I personally have chosen to render Light in a lower case is in John 12. The newest copyright for the NASB has five words of Light for verses 35 and 36. But for verse 46, I choose to go with the NKJ which renders it with the lower case, "I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness." I have found a comparison of John 12:45,46 and John 11:9-ll to be interesting. Here it is for what it is worth. John 12:45, "And he who BEHOLDS Me beholds the One who sent Me. I have come as light into the world, ... " John 11:9b-11a, "'If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he SEES THE Light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the Light is not in him.' This He said, and after that He said to them, "Our [our] friend Lazarus has fallen asleep;..." I think that the NASB has on the whole made some good changes from their 1977 copyright regarding capitalization. Also, may I say as an aside that Mary and Martha's statements are an interesting comparison also. From the heart, Ray |
