1 | why pigs | Luke 8:26 | stjohn | 214373
Dear humility, Scripture does not say anything about what Jesus was thinking in terms of whether the demons and swine were clean or unclean. Scripture gives one reason, and that is: the demons simply asked Him, and He granted them their wish. I would be loath to put thoughts in our Lord's mind... Luke 8:32 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission. John |

2 | what was the reason | Luke 8:26 | Vintage68 | 214385
What are we supposed to learn from this story? What was the purpose for Jesus to be going there in the first place? These people were not Jews, they even raised swine. Mark 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. There isn't any reason given for this trip. These people lived on the eastern side of the Jordan. When the man who was delivered, wanted to go with Jesus, he was told to go home. Was the reason for this, because he was not a Jew? His home was apparently in Decapolis. The only thing I can come up with is in. Mark 4:37-41 We are told there was a storm that night, that was swamping the boat. Maybe they headed for the closest land to make repairs? Where this story then unfolds. From what the disciples said. 41.) And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? They didn't have a clue who he was, or what he was all about. Vintage68 |

3 | what was the reason | Luke 8:26 | stjohn | 214386
Hi Vintage, You are correct in saying that there isn't any reason given for this trip. So to speculate on the reason would be just that, speculation. You also wrote: "They didn't have a clue who he was, or what he was all about." I'm assuming you are talking about the disciples or who later would be known as the apostles. Well if we look at the Gospel of John, we can see that this isn't true at all. After John the Baptist introduced them to Jesus, in ch1 v's41-42, it says: "One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ)." And in v45a it says: "Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote," And in v49 we read: "Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” So we can see, Vintage, they most certainly did know who He was. They may have misunderstood what he was about, but they did indeed know who He was. John |
