Luke 7:38 talks about the woman that washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and wiped them with her hair. What was this about? You know she wore some kind of head covering.

The passage is self-explanatory. When picking a single verse out of the bible it is necessary to read the context of the verse which means you read what goes before the verse and after the verse. Here we see the gratefulness of the women toward Lord Jesus who has forgiven her sins. The streets were dusty and upon entering a home it was the custom to wash the guest's feet. Luke 7:40 And Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he replied, "Say it, Teacher." Luke 7:41 "A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Luke 7:42 "When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?" Luke 7:43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have judged correctly." Luke 7:44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. Luke 7:45 "You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. Luke 7:46 "You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. Luke 7:47 "For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." Luke 7:48 Then He said to her, "Your sins have been forgiven." |

I understand all that, but using her hair was so odd. I understand her gratefullness to Christ, I was just wondering if this was some kind of custom for love and gratefullness?/

Greetings Catfish3! It was a custom for a host to provide water and towel for feet washing. In some case, it was custom for the host to wash his guest's feet. However, I can't find any evidence that it was customary for someone to use his or her hair to dry the guest's feet. It seems that the shock produced by her actions is one of the main features of the account. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dear Catfish, A belated welcome to the forum. May the Lord richly bless your ministry for glorifying our Lord and the Holy Spirit work in the hearts of the adults that they grow in knowledge and love. Both brother Tim and sister Val have given you fine answers in different directions. May I add a bit of my 2 cents of sharing about the passage. We see there is a big contrast (Simon the leper and the sinful woman) in Jesus' saying. My thought has always been overwhelmed by this picture that brought me to apply it to us - professed christians - about the view of sin. This is so convicting to me that sometimes we, as christians, could have focused only on the so-call big sin but forgotten to introspect for the hidden or unnoticed sin. In another word, I might find myself so much moved by our Lord that I have been forgiven for committing murder or adultery etc and thus love Him greatly. However, when it would be the time that I covet and am jealous about something or someone, I might have deemed this only small sin, thus the grieving for it and feeling grateful for being forgiven could be less comparable to the bigger sin. I think it is dangerous for christians to pay lesser attention to smaller (so-call) sin. We really have to guard against ourselves like David did in Psalm 139. Sorry that I seem like rambling and I hope you understand what I am intending to say :-) Shalom Azure |
