1 | A question of capitalization | Luke 22:27 | Makarios | 44415
Greetings Ray! I believe that the NKJV rendering of Luke 22:27 is a little more favorable since it helps us to realize that Jesus, who was God Himself, was also the ultimate servant, in laying down His life so that we may be reconciled to God. So I would be in favor of "One who serves." Blessings to you, Makarios |

2 | A question of capitalization | Luke 22:27 | Ray | 44568
Hi Makarios, I appreciate your participation in this thread. Let's see if a look at the capitalization can be helpful for our understanding and for the glory of God. Luke 22:14, "And when the hour had come (He) reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him." Luke 22:27, "But (I) am among you as..." I think that unless all of the "one" or "he" words are in lower case, the verse is confusing. I believe that the sentence should read, "(I) am among you as the one who serves." I think the key is the "as one" in the sense that He is in the position of one who is serving the supper. If you aren't in agreement with me at all yet, please read Matthew 23:9 before replying. Visualize with me as I compare/contrast our ministers serving communion with Christ serving the bread and wine. Luke 22:16,17, "for I say to you, I/ shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, (He) said, "Take this and share it among yourselves." Hebrews 8:1, "Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a *High *Priest/, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a (*Minister) in the sanctuary, and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man." We have studied enough together, Makarios, that you will recognize my parentheses for comparison and in this last reference will notice a mixture of NKJ and NASB and capitalization changes starred for the NASB. Christ was as you have said the ultimate servant as He broke bread with His disciples. We'll have to say together also that He was the Servant of prophecy in Isa 42:1, NKJ, "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights!" That should be left for another thread perhaps. Also, John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends..." would be another good thread for us to consider. From the heart, Ray |

Lol! :-) Ray, I REALLY thought that we would agree this time, my friend! Oh well, at least I tried! :-) You have good reasons and many more reasons than I do as to why you picked "one" instead of "One." It looks good, and no suggestions come to mind right now in response to your commentary. Continue having fun with capitalization! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Makarios |

4 | A question of capitalization | Luke 22:27 | Ray | 44632
Hi Makarios, It is fun to praise God with capitalization. And I do appreciate your desire to do that. The other thing that I wanted to bring out in this thread includes Luke 22:26. In fact, for my "system of study", this is the key verse for noticing verse 14's (He) reclined at the table. For remember that the one who reclines at the table is the one who is greater. This is the Man who came in the likeness of men but was actually God among us. What I want to do is compare Luke 22:25,26 with Matthew 23:9 which I suggested that you read. After comparing them I will be asking for input on a recommended change for the NASB and NKJ. In Luke 22:25 we are told by Jesus not to be called 'Benefactors' for He says in verse 26, "But not so with you, but let *Him who is the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the *Leader as the servant." The starred capitalized words are my suggested changes to the NASB. Matthew 23:9, NASB "But do not be called Rabbi; for One [sic] is your Teacher [sic], and you are all brothers." Matthew 23:10, "And do not be called leaders; [margin, Or, teachers] for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. 11, But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12, And whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted." So Christ humbled Himself in becoming a servant in the likeness of men, and tells us not to exalt ourselves by capitalized titles like 'Benefactors', or "Father" but only be recognized as [ones] having authority on earth. You might take note of the differences in the NKJ. I go with the NASB for Matthew 23:11,12. We might also want to study Luke 14:11-15 along with Luke 22:14. From the heart, Ray |
