John, Your friend Hank's quote "It forces me to attempt to speak only where the Bible speaks and to keep my mouth shut where the Bible is silent" is wonderful and I try in my research to ground myself by that. However, may I respectfully remind you of when Jesus asks us what we think of the Galileans whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices and what we think of the eighteen who died when the tower fell. When tantalizing tidbits are revealed as prompts to us, He asks us what we think, to dig deep. His words on the cross, "Eli Eli lama sabachthani" are not a literal acknowledgment of God abandoning Jesus, rather they are call to remember the rest of the Psalm and what it means to us. Respectfully, Rick |

You make a good point, although the examples you gave were rhetorical questions, not intended to evoke speculation. I submit, that in a Study Bible Forum, we have a sufficiently abundant amount of material to deliberate over without eliciting, or instructing others to elicit, speculation. Indeed, speculative thinking is far more characteristic of the lost (Romans 1:21; Ephesian 4:17), whereas the believer eschews such things (2 Corinthians 10:5; 1 Timothy 1:4; 2 Timothy 2:23), clinging to those things which can be proved (1 Thessalonians 5:21). After all, it is sound doctrine that we are to hold closely until our Lord returns (Revelation 2:25). May we be found to be good students of the truth (Matthew 13:52; Ephesians 4:13-14) when He comes. | ||||||
