How can this be? "He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb." Luke 1:13,15 (ESV) But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. [15] for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb ("even in and from his mother's womb" Amplified Bible). ------------- "...filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb"? How can this be? I thought one had to be baptized BEFORE he could receive the Holy Spirit, according to advocates of water baptism. Either: a) the Bible is in error here and John the Baptist was NOT "filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother's womb"; or b) somebody forgot to tell John or his parents that you're not supposed to receive the Holy Spirit until you've been properly dunked while the proper "formula" is being said over you; or c) God didn't know that He was violating the gospel according to the water salvation people; or d) None of the above. |

The Holy Spirit is a gift from God. God gives gifts as he sees fit. What's to say that Jesus didn't empart the gift of the Holy spirit on John when Mary visited Elizabeth-- Luke 1:41: When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. I myself was filled with the Holy Spirit years before I was Baptised with water. The spirit comes to those who believe, not those who are baptised. P.S. not to split hairs, but couldn't amniotic fluid be considered as baptism in water? May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 |

Hi Brain Cell, Welcome to the forum. I write to you as one who is interested in capitalization.:)) I tell that to new people so that they know where I am coming from right away. I am interested in consistency in the Scriptures concerning the Man Jesus Christ especially, but am also interested in a better understanding of the Holy Spirit. For that reason I was interested in your upper and lower case use of the Holy Spirit. You will find that I have written that I believe that people are filled with the holy spirit [sic]. In all of the occasions in the Scriptures, I think of the gift of the filling in lower case holy spirit. I think of the Spirit as the Giver and the holy spirit as the gift. Here in Luke 1:41 I believe that Elizabeth was filled with the holy spirit. She was filled with power for witness, filled with words of praise for the Lord's word and for the mother of this Man who was to be born. I believe that I too, should be filled with the holy spirit. Ephesians 5:8. Your Romans 15:13 doxology and the marginal references led me to Isaiah 11. I go with the NKJ here but one should compare it with the NASB. Isaiah 11:1, "There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord." Isaiah 11:10, "And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His/ resting place shall be glorious." The NASB does not include "For the Gentiles shall seek Him". I think that the important thing for us to realize is that we should not resort to the "root" of Jesse but we should seek the Root and trust in Him. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13. From the heart, Ray P.S. I will let someone else answer the question in your post. I hope to hear more from you. |

I'm sorry Ray, I meant to capitalize Holy Spirit each time I typed it, but I'm not accostomed to proof reading my typing for capitalization errors, and so I didn't catch my mistakes. I thank you for including Isaiah 11:1 and Isaiah 11:10, for my spirit feeds off the truth of God as the Holy Spirit nurses it, and those verses were like mothers milk to me filling me with the Holy Spirit from beginning to end. One curious result of being filled with the Spirit is that when I hear the truth of God spoken I can feel my spirit drink in the love of God and shine with inner light just as if my heart is a halogen bulb connected to a dimmer switch. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 |
