1 | Others more important than yourself | Luke 17:7 | DocTrinsograce | 202777 | ||
Hi, refump... Welcome to the forum! The words of Scripture all have a specific historical and grammatical context. We humans have a natural bent which seeks self-promotion, a root motive our hearts; i.e., we have a masters mindset. Instead, we are to adopt of servants mindset. Consequently, the words are addressed to people with a master mindset, helping us to understand the servants mindset, a fundamental characteristic of our Savior. Scripture never calls us to simply act out its commands. Rather, it calls us to a change of root motivations of the heart. A radical change to the fundamental nature of the heart (Luke 6:43-45), something only God can effect in us. Even in the passage you cited, Paul is giving us a mandate of attitude. Fruit is always a manifestation of a plant's DNA (Matthew 7:16-20). Our external behavior is always a visible manifestation of internal realities. Therefore, if these things are true to us, then our actions will be consistent with that belief. In Him, Doc |
