1 | For Our Benefit and His Glory | Luke 13:8 | DocTrinsograce | 127350 | ||
Sometimes it is difficult to endure the digging and fertilizing of our God. But we know that He is doing it for out benefit in love, wisdom, and power. Hebrews 12:6-9 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? |

When we first become christians, most of us are on fire and enthusiastic about our newfound relationship with our Lord and our new family. So most christians would ask "Why do we need to be chastised by the Lord? The few times I goof up and make a mistake, my fellow christians will show me the way and we'll get along fine." Then finally we start maturing after going through a phase of "let down" upon enduring some disappointments with our fellow christians or the world. So like you're saying, it takes some spiritual maturing (and some physical maturing as well) for us to truly appreciate the refining process as Paul refers to, in Hebrews. I've always been taught it's more applicable to think of ourselves as the rock of raw gold ore and the purified potential christianity has to be refined out of us. Like James says in Chapter 1, we "must consider it joy to endure various trials and tribulations," but that's a sign of true Christ-like maturity. I must admit, I like to think I might be mature enough to appreciate whatever the Lord might throw at me but then again, I read the Book of Job and think again, "Would I be truly worthy enough?" How about you? What would be your thoughts on this issue? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Whew, oh no! Not me! I know I'm not up to dealing with "whatever the Lord might throw at me." I have barely been able to endure what little tiny things (comparatively) that He has seen fit to send my way. (Sorry, I won't rise to the bait regarding the authoriship of Hebrews! Too little data and too much speculation. But, between you and me, I think it wasn't Paul, but someone he knew well.) I love the promise in Hebrews 12 that our suffering will eventually yield "the peaceable fruit of righteousness" (verse 11). Often I could do nothing by cling to that promise. I remember teaching my son things. When the lightbulb finally came on and he understood what I was after, it would delight me when he would apply the principles to things I hadn't even talked to him about yet. I sense a bit of this in the middle of Hebrews 12. Imagine, if I can only judge myself (1 Cor 11:31) and apply the Word to my effort toward holiness (Heb 12:14), maybe God wouldn't have to chasten me! :-) |
