Obscure "Current Events" in Scripture ************************************************* I am beginning a listing of obscure references to some events that were current at the time of Jesus and Paul, but did not actually have a 'direct bearing' on the Gospel message, and they have little support outside of the context in which they are mentioned.. Is it any coincidence that all of these occurrences (that I have found) are found in the works of Luke? 1. The fall of the tower of Siloam (Luke 13:4) 2. Theudas and his following (Acts 5:36) 3. Escaped Egyptian who led 4,000 Assassins (Acts 21:38) These are references to 'current events' at the time of Jesus and Paul, simply put in the Bible, I believe, as a reminder to us that as we read of the events of Jesus and the spreading of the Gospel, that other things were naturally happening as well, which, in my opinion, makes the Bible all the more believable. Please feel free to include other such events if you can find them. Blessings to you, Makarios |

2 | Obscure "Current Events" in Scripture | Luke 13:4 | Hank | 105334
Good friend Makarios: The most remarkable event in the history of the world was, paradoxically, but in a very real sense, an obscure current event in the ancient world. I'm alluding to the Advent of Christ Jesus, the day when God became flesh. On that night when Christ was born, who in Jerusalem, a city only five miles away from the little town of Bethlehem, was aware that the event that was occurring in Bethelem was destined to change the world forever? Who in Rome knew or would have cared anything about the Jewish baby in the manger, or would have believed the story of the angels' visit to the shepherds in the fields? Jesus grew up and lived out His life in a very small part of the world. He did not make a far-reaching splash in the world outside Palestine during His lifetime, and in fact, as the world measures power and success, He did not attain much of either even within the borders of that small country. His death by crucifixion was, in the perspecive of current world events of His time, a relatively obscure and little-noted event. Even His resurrection, the most important event in all Christendom, was ignored or scoffed at by all but a relatively few observers. And yet we know that this God-Man, this Jesus, who was born in relative obscurity, lived, died, and was resurrected without making a big splash in the world at the time, has altered the course of history as no other ever has, ever will, or ever can. The story of Jesus is the story of how an obscure, humble, wayfaring preacher from Nazareth, a small town in a small nation, not only changed the course of history, but He has changed millions of lives. He lives still and is the only hope mankind has or will ever have for salvation. That's the miracle. No one could do what Jesus did. No one could impact the world as Jesus did as the Incarnate Word, and He continues impact it as the Risen Christ. No one else can wash away our sins so that we can stand justified before a holy and righteous God. No one but Jesus and no blood but His can atone for our sins. Still and all, Jesus remains in our time obscure to many and rejected by most of mankind. What a pity. What fools we mortals be! --Hank

Amen, Hank! I agree, what fools we mortals be should we reject the only Way in which we can be saved! (Acts 4:12) You were absolutely right: Jesus came in a very obscure way, but He will make His Second Coming in a way in which the whole world will know immediately that He has come! The Second Coming will be anything but obscure! :-) Thank you for your post, my friend! Makarios |
