Greetings Strts5, You ask "Is it documented where all these people went and at which point in Jesus ministry this occurred? Was He already on His way to Jerusalem?" The seventy are sent as the second forewarners of the coming of Christ (see Luke 9:3-5 and Matt. 10:5-42 for the 1st wave), and this may have been a regular tactic of Jesus (see Luke 9:51-56) as He was indeed on His way to Jerusalem (Luke 9:51,53). The seventy could cover a large amount of territory, but the verse does indicate that Jesus Himself was to follow after and investigate the work done. As the time of His earthly ministry was coming to a close, it increased in earnestness and activity. The Lord visited as many places in person as possible, and these messengers were sent before to preach to the people and to prepare the way. Mark is the only Gospel that mentions this mission and we don't hear about the 70 again after this. We know that the Twelve went into Galilee (9:1-6), but these 70 are sent into every city and place where Jesus was about to go, which was Judea (see Matt. 19:1). Jesus would cover this entire area with His ministry, and it was from here that He would make His final journey to Jerusalem just prior to the Passion Week (Matt. 20:17-19). But after Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, and despite all of His efforts at spreading the Word of His Coming, He would still find Jerusalem unrepentant and unready at the time of His first Coming (Matt. 21; Luke 19:41; John 12:40,43). Blessings to you, Makarios |
