1 | deny himself, and take up his cross | Mark 8:34 | stjohn | 215608
--"To carry the cross, to love the cross, to chastise the body and bring it to subjection, to flee honors, to endure contempt gladly, to despise self and wish to be despised, to suffer any adversity and loss, to desire no prosperous days on earth—this is not man’s way. If you rely upon yourself, you can do none of these things, but if you trust in the Lord, strength will be given you from heaven and the world and the flesh will be made subject to your word. You will not even fear your enemy, the devil, if you are armed with faith and signed with the cross of Christ. Set yourself, then, like a good and faithful servant of Christ, to bear bravely the cross of your Lord, Who out of love was crucified for you."-- Thomas a Kempis' Imitation of Christ Ch II.12 |

2 | deny himself, and take up his cross | Mark 8:34 | Searcher56 | 215616
God's day to you, John, Taking up or carrying one's cross meant death, nothing less, as seen in Matthew 27:40 and other verses. It all begins with denying self, which Jesus set as an example (Phil 2:5-8), for He, as the Son of God, being God Himself, gave up all that for us. Are you willing yo give up all your rights and die along with Him? Searcher |

3 | deny himself, and take up his cross | Mark 8:34 | stjohn | 215619
Dear Searcher, Rights? What rights? The only thing we rightfully own are our wages. And the wages of sin is death. Everything else already belongs to God. We have nothing else to do that is efficacious for us, as son's of God, but to die to ourselves a little bit more each day. Yes brother, I joyfully, and gratefully die at the cross a little each day, until that day when we will be totally transformed into His glory. How about you? John |

4 | deny himself, and take up his cross | Mark 8:34 | Searcher56 | 215620
John, People THINK they have rights. Little do those without Christ know they are slaves to sin, as Romans 6:16-20 and other passages tell all. They think they are exercising their rights, having it their way ... but, their slavemaster, Satan, is in control. Looking at the context of this verse (Mark 8:27-38) and the cross reference (Matt 16:13-28, Luke 9:18-27) it is not giving a little more of yourself daily ... but to be willing to physically die for Him daily.
