1 | deny himself, and take up his cross | Mark 8:34 | DocTrinsograce | 215627 | ||
Hi, Brother John... He is most well known for "The Imitation of Christ" a very nice devotional. I have a copy in my office and another at home. If you ever see it somewhere, you can pick it up usually very inexpensively. You can find it on the Internet, too. For example: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1653 It is a Roman Catholic classic, and has been favored for quite some time. He waxes a bit mystical in places, presuming to speak in the first person as Christ or as the Holy Spirit. To a sola scriptura guy, that sends up red flags. However, when you read the devotionals, you find that he never goes over or under the strict sense of the Scriptures in proper contextual interpretation. Frankly, he does that more narrowly and carefully than even some of the very early church fathers. It is a refreshing thing to find a solidly, Scriptural brother in the midst of the Middle Ages. The Christians of that period generally tended to be awfully superstitious and generally pretty muddled up. In Him, Doc |

Hey Doc, I did read that he was a mystic and wondered about that? :-( But I guess given his historical setting it's shouldn't be too surprising and at least somewhat expected. I was reading from, "The Imitation of Christ", that's where I puled those quotes from. I found it at "Christian Classics Ethereal Library". http://www.ccel.org/ccel/kempis/imitation. It's a great website, and has hundreds, maybe thousands of free online classic books that are not under copyright and in the public domain! :-) Thanks for the the link and info bro. John p.s. Did I tell you how nice it is to have you back? :-) |
