1 | What are you listening to? | Mark 4:24 | Mommapbs | 114560
Why do you think the Lord warned His disciples to "take care what you listen to"? How do we obey this today? (I don't think that Jesus had rock, reggae or rap in mind here!) Are we evaluating what we "hear" according to the Truth of God's Word, or are we at times deceived by clever yarns spun by worldly weavers? or perhaps even crafty clergy!? (the mantra of the 60's, "tune in, turn on, drop out" as well as the liberal media comes to mind here) There is a result:"For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away ( by force)." v 25 Amp - Is this a picture of the ultimate "dropping out?" Comments and observations are welcomed! |

2 | What are you listening to? | Mark 4:24 | Hank | 114569
Mommapbs - Well, Jesus MAY have had rock, reggae and rap in mind when He said, "Take care of what you listen to"! Have you heard any of this filty stuff lately? Some of it is unspeakably vile. ..... But I rather believe that our Lord was simply telling His followers to pay attention to His teaching. The New Living Translation does a fine job of bringing out the meaning of the passage: "Everything that is now hidden or secret will eventually be brought to life. Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand. And be sure to pay attention to what you hear. The more you do this, the more you will understand -- and even more besides. To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But to those who are not listening, even what they have will be taken away from them." (Mark 4:22-25). ...... You ask how we can obey Jesus' command today. Listen and pay attention to the spoken word from the pulpit. Compare it with what Scripture teaches. Study the written word intently and with concentration. No dreaming about a forthcoming Florida vacation, no wool gathering. As the old King James says, "STUDY to shew thyself approved unto God...." ..... I believe the context of the passage leads us to confine our interpretation of "take care of what you listen to" to the teaching of Scripture and not to extend the meaning, at least not of this passage, to any broader base than that. --Hank

Greetings Hank! I wholeheartedly agree . . . the urgency to KNOW the Word is so imperative as without this foundation, even believers are susecptible to being deceived by all kinds of "good" ideas that just mask the spirit of Antichrist. Moral relativism reigns today, yet where are the believers? Asleep, I'm afraid. They neglect the mandate of Christ to GO, to MAKE disciples , and to TEACH . . . perhaps the reason they don't or "can't" is because they themselves have not moved any farther than their moment of salvation. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not in any way suggesting that the cross is any less, but it is SO MUCH MORE! This is what I believe that many Christians have failed to understand. Because of the cross, should we not be demanding a return to the moral absolutes that our very life depends upon?! But we seem to be stuck, unable to challenge the vain philosopies and traditions that "govern" (enslave) the hearts of mankind today. For example, how did we ever come to such a point where we would have to define what marriage is? Is this absurd? I believe that homosexuality is one of the most destructive forces in society today, yet we evangelicals sit back and just rail that "the Bible says . . ." BUT, for those who don't believe in the authority of Scripture, are we prepared to SHOW THEM WHY this perversion of God's order will lead to our downfall? Woefully, believers are choosing to remain sequestered in their pews with their minds closed to all but the simplest elements of their faith. We are addicted to spoonfeeding, believing that we are unable to "test the spirits" - let the Pastor do that! Yet what did Jesus say, "follow Peter" or "follow Me"? Perhaps He will lead us down a parth where the intellectual accuity He gives us (His very mind) will be exercized and used to defeat every lofty speculation that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. 2 COr 10:5 (Yet of course this requires that we KNOW Him first! So yes, to study the Word is imperative but I also believe we MUST sift every idea through that tool!) You are absolutely right Hank as you encourage us to "Listen and pay attention to the spoken word from the pulpit. Compare it with what Scripture teaches. Study the written word intently and with concentration." Now, is it inappropriate to EXTEND the meaning of this passage (to study or pay attention to God's Word)to encourage believers to pay attention to what they "hear" in the world in which they live and implore them to evaluate and respond with the "measure" of God? Blessings, mommapbs |
