1 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | Ray | 148833
Hi Angel, You did some great work here. I would love to discuss your three points with you at some time down the road if possible. For now let me talk about your last sentence and the Scripture reference. You said that "we can accept the Holy Spirit as both God's Gift and the gift giver." You have chosen not to capitalize "giver" so I surmise that you would NOT say that "we can accept the Holy Spirit as both God's Gift and as the Giver of gifts." Please comment on that. Romans 5:5 is interesting because of the grammar of the Greek. We have in the choices of translation, "was given" as in the NASB or "is given" as in the KJ. Please comment. May I say again for any new reader that I believe in the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. I simply am suggesting the holy spirit as a gift. From the heart, Ray P.S. Good night. |

2 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | JCrichton | 148893
Hi, Ray! It was a pure oversight... I am not as good a proof reader as I would like to be... it was only after my reply was posted that I caught the error... the Holy Spirit is God so He is the Giver! As far as the translation... my language skills are limited to English and Spanish (I can derive some understanding from certain root words from the related languages such as Italian, Portuguese, and French and some Latin), so I cannot add much to the translation of Greek... I can relate this argument to Scripture... and state with certainty that both translations would be correct as we know that Jesus told us that He would send the Holy Spirit from the Father (John 15:26), and He also said that He, the Holy Spirit, would be with us and in us (John 14:17)... Peter, in Acts 2:14-18, reminds us that the prophet Joel prophesied that the Holy Spirit would come in the last days (Jesus' incarnation, death, resurrection and ascension)... finally, we know that the Apostles gave the Holy Spirit to the Believers through the imposition of the hands (Acts 8:18)... Since the Holy Spirit is God, He can be both the Gift and the Giver--He is Omnipresent being both able to indwell in the Believers as well as be among the Believers! ...for the purpose of illustration: We find in Acts the description of a direct intercesion by the Holy Spirit as He commands a Believer to seek out a specific uniniciated man... this man who is thirsting for the Truth is brought into the fold and it is the Holy Spirit (the Giver) who Wills this anointment (the gift) of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 8:26-39) Ray, now I need clarification... the Holy Spirit is seen by some as some type of energy or something like it... so when you say, "I simply am suggesting the holy spirit as a gift," are you saying that you believe that the Holy Spirit is restricted to an energy or the embodiment of charismas/dynamics? God Bless! Angel |

3 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | Ray | 149013
Hi Angel, I interpret the passage of Acts 8:26-39 differently from you. I do not see the Holy Spirit spoken of in the passage at all. I say that because I view the "angel" of the Lord that spoke to Philip in verse 26 as being a "spirit." Thus for verse 29 and verse 39 I see this spirit speaking to Philip and eventually snatching him away. Philip preached Jesus to the man (from the Scriptures) and he came to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. There is power in the words of God. Choose another passage that indicates your point and we'll consider that again. From the heart, Ray |

4 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | JCrichton | 149079
Hi, Ray! ...problem is that one of us loves Pepsy and the other Coke... they are uh sooo very close, but Pepsy lovers contend that theirs is the drink of the hour while Coca Cola lovers contend that theirs is the drink of the hour... I will offer you one more Scripture, though, from your previous interpretation, I doubt that you will see anything other than what you've already stated... In Acts 5:29-32 Peter concludes his thought by naming the Holy Spirit as both a witness (one who actively involved in an incident) and God's gift... I will also refer you to Acts 5:3 and 4 where Peter warns that Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, not to man but to God... Also, Jesus did not say that He would give us many gifts that would teach us the fullness of Truth, He said that the Holy Spirit would teach us the fullness of Truth (John 16:13)... Further, it is not a gift that brings us to God but the thrid Person of God, the Holy Spirit... Christ Jesus is God and He does not need any gift in order to Exist... but the Holy Spirit was directly involved in both His incarnation (Luke 1:35) and resurrection (Romans 1:4--of course, since it doesn't say Holy Ghost/Spirit you would most likely argue that this passage is speaking about some sort of spiritual beign like an angel or something...); before you dismiss these passages, I suggest that you read related Scriptural passages and think of them collectively... by divorcing one segment of Scripture from all others we may get a warped understanding of God's Word... remember, Jesus did not leave a spirit in charge of the Church... it is only the other Paraclete who can lead and teach the Church, just as of old when He inspired the holy men of God to prophesy about God's Salvafic Plan. God Bless! Angel |

Hi Angel, I have the Holy Spirit capitalized for Acts 5:32 and Acts 5:3. The places where I have a penciled in lower case "holy spirit" is where the references speak of being "filled with the holy spirit"; for I see no compelling reason to see the Person in thoses verses. In Acts 5:3,4 the connection between "lying to the Holy Spirit" and "lying to God" is a compelling reason to think of the Holy Spirit as God. For John 16:13 I do not see the Person of the Truth. I see the "truth" being disclosed. The Spirit of truth guides us into all the truth. The Spirit of truth reminds us of all the things of God and discloses "it" to us. I have no problem with thinking of Jesus as the Truth, and John 16:14 says that the Spirit will glorify Him (the Truth), but what is disclosed is the truth. Romans 1:4 we can discuss at that thread. Hi, Ray! I understand how you would opt to pencil in the text as to distinguish the Holy Spirit as the counselor and the Holy Spirit once He is in us... I suggest to you that He does not diminishes in His capacity, just as Jesus did not diminished as the Lamb of God... so whether to Holy Spirit is guiding the Church or indwelling in an individual, He is the Holy Spirit! (water as liquid, solid, gas is still water) ...and yes, the truth that is disclosed is Jesus so I emphasized this by capitalizing the "t" (Truth)... He is the truth/Truth that sets us free! (resurrection and life) Some Bible versions have "the spirit of sanctification;" yet, since we know that there is only one "spirit of sanctification," I suggest that the "s" in spirit should always be capitalized! It is the Holy Spirit that sanctifies the Word (both Christ and the Holy Scripture) and the believers! God Bless! Angel |

Hi Angel, I would suppose that you left out a "don't" and meant to say that "I DON'T understand how you would opt to pencil in the text." May I say that I don't have any problem with the Scriptures that say that Christ is in us or that His Spirit indwells us. See Ephesians 3:16,17. But the "fulness of God" is being filled with knowledge and knowing the love of Christ. Grace and truth was given to us and He gives gifts to men. The Spirit fills us with all these things "until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of Christ,..." Ephesians 4:13. Ephesians 5:18, "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the *spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;" The Spirit of sanctification: Ephesians 3:25, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her; 26 that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,..." 1) So I would say that we are washed with the word. Jesus came from God and spoke the words of God. He gave the words (spirit) without measure; John 3:34. We would not be able to contain the Spirit if given to us without measure; but we are given all things and washed with His words. 2) There is a difference between being "indwelt with His Spirit" and being "filled with the spirit". Hi, Ray! There was no oversight... I could also understand how you see indweling of the Holy Spirit and being filled with the holy spirit as something that is determined by an action not who is doing the act... We can never contain God in our limited being... but when we read Genesis we find that man was created in the image and likeness of God, and that, as no other being, God gave life to man by an influx of His Spirit... We also learned from Scripture that Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to the Eleven prior to Pentecost... but that it was at the meeting during Pentecost that all of the gathered disciples received the Holy Spirit in a visible measure to let the world know that the prophecy in Joel was being fulfilled! ...each time, we are but simple vessels that cannot contain God... it is through His mercy that we receive, according to His design, an influx or indwelling of His Spirit! God Bless! Angel |
