1 | tithing or donations | Mark 12:41 | descombobulation | 58159
I was always under the impression that Catholics donate; that it's not called tithing. I am currently discussing this my life long friend. We went to Catholic Schools together. I don't know why she is now calling her church donations tithing. Can you help me find this in the New Testament?

Descombobulation I'm not sure what the Catholics call it but I was raised in Evangelical United Brethren Church and there we called our money giving a donation or offering. The church itself never used the word tithe, although they did teach on giving. If I remember correctly I didn’t hear the use of tithe until I got involved with a “Full Gospel” church. Now I think most conservative churches use the word. I think many churches avoided the word tithe in effort to avoid the discussion if it was placing us back under the Law. Also most Christian teaching in mainline denominations was from the New Testament and tithing wasn’t part of the vocabulary and the offering or donation did the same thing, supporting the work of the Lord. There have been endless discussions on tithing on this forum, and I think the general consciences is tithing is an Old Testament term however the New Testament did not do away with it. And it is probably a good guideline to base our giving, understanding we are expected to support the church and those that labor in it. EdB |
