What does it mean here to be "in the Holy Spirit?" See also Matthew 22:43 and Luke 20:42. | ||||||

Greetings, Ray. The Amplified renders this verse like this: "David himself, [inspired] in the Holy Spirit, declared..." I believe David's words were "breathed by God"--the Holy Spirit itself spoke and David was just the instrument by which the words were conveyed to us. "For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so--it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit." [2 Peter 1:21 Amplified] "Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action)..." [2 Tim. 3:16 Amplified] This is the underlying premise of Hebrews 4:12, in my opinion. "For whatever was thus written in former days was written for our instruction, that by [our steadfast and patient] endurance and the encouragement [drawn] from the Scriptures we might hold fast to and cherish hope." [Rom. 15:4 Amplified] Kind regards, Tim D. Cormier Tennessee Preacher |

Hi Tim, It will be good to talk with you again, for I see now that I have not answered one of your notes. You wrote here "I believe David's words were "breathed by God"--the Holy Spirit itself spoke and David was just the instrument by which the words were coveyed to us." By your saying "the Holy Spirit itself" you are coming close to what I am thinking. I believe that the Holy Spirit is not only a Person, but is also a message, words, a spirit of influence, a wind if you will. John 3:8, "The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit." Is it possible that when we speak the word of God it is the "spirit that is given without measure"? John 3:34, "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the spirit without measure." Or, John 6:63, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life." I suggest to you that the holy spirit could be equated with the word of God. Just as the Holy Spirit is the Word. David's 95th Psalm were words of holy spirit given to him by God. Psalm 95:7, "Today, if you would hear His voice..." Or, "Today, O that you would obey His voice..." You mentioned Hebrews 4. We hear the word of God and obey and don't harden our hearts. Hebrews 4:7, "He again fixes a certain day, "Today," saying through [Or, in] David after so long a time just as has been said before, "Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts." I think that the promise of the Father is not only the Spirit of truth, but also the gift of the holy spirit, the word of God. See Acts 2:4 I hope that some of my thoughts are clear and you can go further. From the heart, Ray |
