Hi! Great question ... Remember the context here. Our Lord is teaching on outlook and priority. He is teaching that our focus is to be upon Him rather than the cares and snares of this world. So then, as we have our primary focus upon Him, our aim and goal becomes the character of Christ (Rom 12:1-2) as we operate in the sphere of the kingdom. This kingdom is now inaugurated in our hearts and will be consumated when the Lord returns to rule and reign (Rev 20:4ff). This Christ-like character is enabled and sustained by the indwelling Holy Spirit (Eph 2:2ff, Col. 2:6-7). This phrase also has a wider application in the doctrine of our salvation in Christ. For, as we are saved from the penalty of sin, we have the righteousness of Christ imputed or placed to our account (so that God sees us positionally as the righteousness of our perfect Advocate who is Christ(1 John 2:1-2), just so we are saved from the power of sin in our lives in an ongoing way (sanctification) and, praise God, on that great day we will be yet saved from the presence of sin eternally. Whoa, long answer, but there's even more there to be pondered! |
