1 | When fasting can I drink coffee? | Matt 6:16 | DocTrinsograce | 240184
Hi, bway... While the answers you have gotten on the question of coffee and fasting are, if nothing else, quaint and curious. Nevertheless, do not allow men to bind your conscience with things that are not in the Bible (see Colossians 2:16-17 and 1 Timothy 4:1-4). Instead, let the Lord speak to you through the Word as He has directed (Hebrews 1:1-2). After all it is in the keeping of our Lord's commands conveyed through the Bible that we demonstrate our love (John 14:21), rather than through the traditions and commands of men (Matthew 15:9; Titus 1:4). The Scripture does not prescribe what precisely constitutes a fast for the believer. However, it does say that whether we eat or drink it should be done to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Of course, the Bible does not mention coffee. Consequently, an answer from Scripture to your question is not possible one way or another. In Him, Doc |

2 | When fasting can I drink coffee? | Matt 6:16 | Jalek | 240186
Greetings Doc, I believe the Bible does provide enough insight to give an answer. Fasting is mentioned several times throughout the Bible, and lasts for varying durations up to 40 days. Now, given that the human body can't go without food and water that long, it's reasonable to assume that water and bread were acceptable. In many cases throughout scripture, people who fasted abstained from even bread and water. According to Leviticus 23, people fasted at certain times through the year, such as the Day of Atonement, in order to humble themselves and atone for their sins before God. Isaiah 58 and Zachariah 7 speak of what is proper for a fast. It's the motive. Are you fasting because it's required or expected? Are you fasting because you want people to see how pious you are? Or are you fasting because you wish to correct your relationship with God and come closer to him? Now, to readdress the issue from the original question of drinking coffee in the middle of a fast. The idea of a fast is to abstain or go without. If one drinks coffee all the time, and continue through the Fast, is that person really fasting for the right motives? No, its more like a coffee only diet than fasting. Jalek |

3 | When fasting can I drink coffee? | Matt 6:16 | DocTrinsograce | 240187
Hi, Jalek... Yes, fasting is mentioned in Scripture... including how (attitude) and why (purpose). What constitutes a fast for the Christian is absent from the Bible. (Leviticus 23:14 records a particular kind of fast for Israel: the shadow prefiguring the atonement of Christ (Colossians 2:16-17). When that which was promised is actualized, the shadow is abandoned by the far superior reality; .e.g. animal sacrifices in the Temple (cf Hebrews 10:1-18).) We might well encourage believers to fast and to do it rightly. When people come to the Word of God for answers we need to say what Scripture says and all that it says, but not more than it says (Deuteronomy 4:2; Revelation 22:18-19). This is the purpose and spirit, I believe, of the bulletized items specified by our host in the Terms of Use. It is certainly consistent with the doctrine of sola Scriptura, the presupposition on which the NASB translation was undertaken. In Him, Doc |
