I ask this question in the context of the events of September 11, 2001. I understand that God asks us to fight evil, and the Old Testament is replete with examples from Israel's history. Surely, with this verse, He is not asking us to sit still and accept acts of evil visited upon our country by forces of Satan. Does not God desire us to battle evil at times like this?

Even though we may personally have to deal with this type of thing, we must maintain a serious discipline to be Biblical. And barring the extremely unusual need to personally confront real terror in our face, remember the Bible doesn't put our national security in everyone's hands. I believe it is largely in the president's and senator's and congressmen and military people -- even F.B.I. and N.S.A. and on and on. So we havn't been struck on the cheek, there is no current application of the text from the sermon on the mount. That text is giving a personal response to a personal problem, not a national response to a national problem. Jesus is here pointing to the need to not do as the Jews of His day were doing, where they loved their neighbor while hating their enemies. They were not getting the real point of the law so Jesus drives the point to them so they could see the perfect demands of the law, concluding with "therefore be ye perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect."
