1 | What does "unfaithful" mean? | Matt 5:32 | Highlands | 191855 | ||
In Matthew 5:32 (NLT) Jesus says, " But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery." Earlier in 5:28 (NLT) Jesus also says, " But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart." My questions are: •What does "unfaithful" in this context mean? Does it only have a sexual connotation or does it cover other aspects of marriage? For example, in the marriage vows provision is made for caring for one another in sickness and in health. If one were to break this vow, would one be "unfaithful"? •Secondly, if simply lusting after a woman makes a man guilty of adultery then this must render him unfaithful if this were to occur within the marriage. •Then finally, I assume that Jesus is not being gender specific i.e. a woman too may divorce a man if he is unfaithful. |
