1 | Evidence for "easter"? | Matt 28:6 | DocTrinsograce | 227352
Wikipedia states: The modern English term Easter developed from the Old English word Eastre or Eostre, which itself developed prior to 899. The name refers to Eostur-monath (Old English "Eostre month"), a month of the Germanic calendar attested by Bede (672-735), who writes that the month is named after the goddess Eostre of Anglo-Saxon paganism. Bede notes that Eostur-monath was the equivalent to the month of April, yet that feasts held in her honor during Eostur-monath had gone out of use by the time of his writing and had been replaced with the Christian custom of "Paschal season."

Dear Justme, Why questions are always so difficult... A practice is established by repetition. I suppose that that is less than satisfying, plus it begs the question. However, in this instance, any answer necessarily involves liturgy, etymology, history, culture, and society. My own engineering background does not shed any light on the topic. In Him, Doc PS I think what I mean is I don't know. :-) |

Doc(:-) For an engineering background, you sure are Biblically very wise.. I would believe it if you said you had a PHD in Theology. You are well informed and very knowledegable. Often you wording and termonology reminds me of our dearly loved brother Hank. I mean this in a very high complement Doc. Blessings. justme |
