1 | I'm confused | Matt 28:1 | onewaytriple7 | 109381
I was reading the Bible today and one question poped out at me in Luke 24 verse 2 through 4 it states:they found the stone rolled away from the tomb but when they entered the did not find the body of Christ while they we're wondering about this suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lighting stood beside them.then in Matthew 28 it states :After the Sabbath at dawn on the first day of the week mary magdalene and the other mary went to look at the tomb there was a violent earthquake for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and going to the tomb rolled back the the stone and sat on it. now I will skip to verse 4 where it says the gaurds were so frightend that they became like dead men now comes my question in luke it says that they found the stone rolled back in/in matthew it says that the angel did it and says he sat on it in luke it says that he stood next to them in the tomb and in mark 16:5 it says he was sitting inside the tomb and in luke it says nothing about the soldiers and I was wondering if there was any contradictionas here or am I just reading it wrong which I think I am but was just wondering if someone could shed some light on this it would greatly be appreciated sorry for the long question GOG BLESS onewaytriple7
2 | I'm confused | Matt 28:1 | Morant61 | 109382
Greetings OneWayTriple7! One helpful practice is to take the four accounts, print them out, and then compare the side by side. If you do, you will find that there is no contradiction here. Let's look carefully at the evidence. Matthew records that an angel rolled the stone away, but he does not say that this occured in the presence of the women. In fact, the aorist verbs used could very well indicate that this happened prior to the women arriving. Mt. 28:5 has the angel addressing the women, but it does not specify where the women were when the angel spoke to them. Luke mentions two angels and specifically states that the women found the stone already rolled away. He doesn't specifically state where the angels spoke to the women, but it appears to have been in the tomb. Mark specifically states that the stone was already rolled away and that the angel spoke to them while they were in the tomb. John also specifically mentions that the stone was already rolled away. John doesn't mention any angels at all - at first. After the women go and bring back Peter and John, Mary is said to have been left at the tomb where she then sees two angels. However, note that the conversation is quite different than the earlier conversation recorded in the other three gospels. So, in light of all of this, where exactly would one see a contradiction? Let's remember the meaning of a contradiction. A contradiction is someone saying A and not A at the same time in the same way. One account mentioning two angels, while another only mentions one is not a contradiction. One account telling about the soilders, while the other three don't bother to mention them at all is not a contradiction. A contradiction would be Matthew saying that the stone was still over the tomb when the women got there while another Gospel said that the stone was rolled away when they got there. We need to remember that we have four seperate accounts (2 by eyewitnesses and 2 by testimony) very briefly sketching a very complex and powerful historical episode covering several days of time. None of them could possibly list every possible detail. However, all the details that they do mention are in agreement with one another. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
