Mat. 24:36 says the "Son will not know, only the Father"..., so was Christ omniscient?

Greetings Caribu, This verse is similar to Mark 13:32.. Scripture is abundantly clear that in His divine nature, Jesus is omniscient- just as omniscient as the Father is (John 2:25, 7:29, 8:55, 10:15, 16:30, 17:25, 21:6-11,17, Luke 5:4-6, Matthew 11:27, 17:27). However, in Matthew 24:36 and Mark 13:32, I am convinced that Jesus is speaking from the perspective of His humanity, since He was both divine and human while remaining one Person. From Christ's divine standpoint, He is as omniscient as the Father. But from His human standpoint, He did not know the day or hour of His return. Blessings to you, Makarios |

I heard a pastor say that "Jesus emptied himself and therefore did not know some things in his human form". He was fully God, and fully human; therefore, I think he knew everything. This is one of those things in the Bible we will never be able to understand; therefore, we'll just trust God to give us the answer one day.

Hi Caribu, Phi 2:6 who subsisting in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, having become in the likeness of men 8 and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, having become obedient until death, even the death of a cross. (LITV) Jesus did not retain any advantage for Himself from His Godhood, but instead emptied Himself, not coming as Almight God, but as a Servant. Joh 12:49 For I did not speak from Myself, but He who sent Me, the Father, He has given Me command, what I should say, and what I should speak. Joh 10:32 Jesus answered them, I showed you many good works from My Father. For which work of them do you stone Me? Joh 5:36 But I have the greater witness than John's, for the works which the Father has given Me, that I should finish them, the works which I do, themselves, witness concerning Me, that the Father has sent Me. Jesus did the works of His Father, not His own works. He spoke the words of His Father, not His own words. Isa 11:2 And the Spirit of Jehovah shall rest on Him; He will have the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Jehovah. (LITV) He did these things by the power of the Holy Spirit, and was the Perfect Man. But He was subject to the will and purpose of the Father. If there was something that could not be know by normal means, and the Father did not wish to reveal to the Son, the Son would not have otherwise known it, because He had in fact "emptied Himself". So when the Father did not reveal "that day and hour", Jesus did not otherwise know when it would be. Jesus did not do any works that the Father did not direct Him, and the Spirit did not empower Him, to do. Jesus had the knowledge, wisdom, and power that the Father willed, and the Spirit enabled, in order to do the exact ministry that the Father directed, no more, and no less. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
