1 | Every NATION or every PERSON? | Matt 24:14 | mark d seyler | 169298
Hi John, I do, now, have a question regarding the Greek text on this passage. Luke 13:34 begins with direct address to "Jerusalem, Jerusalem", so Jesus is speaking to the city itself. As a proper noun, Jerusalem is indeclinable. The form of "you would not have it" - ethelesate - is second person plural. My first inclination for the antecedant to the implied "you" would be "Jerusalem", to which Jesus addressed. But since this is a plural form, should it in fact be directed back to the Parisees, even though this would mean Jesus changed His intended audience mid-sentence? Are you aware of a Greek grammatical rule that would answer this? Tim, are you out there? Do you know? Notwithstanding, this does not affect my analysis of the passage. But like I said, I want to know. :-) Love in Christ, Mark |

2 | Every NATION or every PERSON? | Matt 24:14 | Morant61 | 169302
Greetings Mark! I don't have my best resource books here at home, so I'll have to dig some more into this question at my office latter tonight. :-) My gut says that you are probably correct and that Jerusalem is the subject of 'you were not willing'. Either way, the subject of 'you were not willing' does not affect your conclusions since either way someone is 'resisting' God's will. Gill tries to explain this away by saying that 'will' here does not refer to God's eternal will, but simply to the desire of the 'man' Jesus. Here is what the Net Bible says about the change in number in this verse: "Although the opening address ("Jerusalem, Jerusalem") is direct (second person), the remainder of this sentence in the Greek text is third person ("who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her"). The following sentences then revert to second person ("your... you"), so to keep all this consistent in English, the third person pronouns in the present verse were translated as second person ("you who kill... sent to you")." I will try to do some more checking later tonight. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Thank you, Tim, I greatly appreciate your help with this. I am finding that learning Greek is a slow and laborious process! The Lord willing, I shall continue to advance, however slowly! I look forward to what you can find! Love in Christ, Mark |

Mark: He IS willing. He is not willing that any should not know Greek -- including you. But has he decreed that everyone SHALL learn Greek? Just kidding! :-) No irreverence intended. Kalos |
