1 | Every NATION or every PERSON? | Matt 24:14 | mark d seyler | 169298 | ||
Hi John, I do, now, have a question regarding the Greek text on this passage. Luke 13:34 begins with direct address to "Jerusalem, Jerusalem", so Jesus is speaking to the city itself. As a proper noun, Jerusalem is indeclinable. The form of "you would not have it" - ethelesate - is second person plural. My first inclination for the antecedant to the implied "you" would be "Jerusalem", to which Jesus addressed. But since this is a plural form, should it in fact be directed back to the Parisees, even though this would mean Jesus changed His intended audience mid-sentence? Are you aware of a Greek grammatical rule that would answer this? Tim, are you out there? Do you know? Notwithstanding, this does not affect my analysis of the passage. But like I said, I want to know. :-) Love in Christ, Mark |

Thanks Mark, I have been down this road before. Not being a Greek scholar myself, I rely on respected people in the field for guidance. In this case it is James White. His website is aomin.org. I have to pick up my wife from work, but will post you later. John |
