1 | (no short q. for what i have to say :-P) | Matt 21:22 | SMO | 151860
I have read all the postings about this verse, and all seem to make sense, but none click for me. Doesnt Jesus say, 21 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. 22If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." I wish to highlight the word WILL, you 'WILL' receive whatever you ask for. It doesn't say, 'If you believe, whatever request you make will be put before God.' I also beleive this ties in closely with, 'God hears the prayer of a righteous man.' So my reasoning is, a prayer offered in righteousness WILL be answered. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. Here i beleive the key phrase is 'so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.' When asking for things, think, 'will it bring glory to my God?' These are my thoughts, with this, it seems evident that Jesus is promising that my prayers will be answered, but why arn't they answered when i pray that God's presence fills my bedroom while im praying at night, or that my sick Grandmother is healed, or that i see the face of God and can have a converstaion with Him, or that a messenger is sent to my non-chrisitan girlfriend so that she will see and believe. All these things would bring SUCH glory to God! I KNOW that Jesus isn't a lier, and if he said those things, they are true, which means it can only be something wrong on my part... How do i gain more faith...? I was praying on this a few nights ago and a phrase came to my mind, 'How can i know the power of God if i don't know the heart of God.' That has been my strongest lead so far in solving this... Thanks if you've had the patience to read this long question... |

Dear SMO, You make some good points. I'd remind you that the source of our faith is God Himself. Through the renewing of our minds, we know how to pray properly. Those are the prayers that are answered. Scripture clearly speaks to prayers that will not be answered, as well. I think you are right about the importance of bringing glory to God. In fact, I'd say that you are so right, we can be certain that any prayer that is not answered means that God is brought greater glory by NOT answering. You also asked, "why arn't they answered when i pray that God's presence fills my bedroom while im praying at night" He is there, son. He's there just as certainly as He is here with me now or on the throne of heaven. You asked, "that my sick Grandmother is healed" There is another command of Scripture: waiting upon the Lord. You asked, "that i see the face of God and can have a converstaion with Him" See Hebrews 12:4. You asked, "that a messenger is sent to my non-chrisitan girlfriend so that she will see and believe" Again, learn to wait on the Lord. You're insisting on your timing. You're not God. You wrote, "All these things would bring SUCH glory to God!" Son, that is in your own estimation. God knows what, when, and how to do things to bring him maximum glory. Those are things that He will do. You cannot judge these things, but He can and will. Ask the Lord to cause you to understand, wait, submit, and love Him. You are well on the right path as you have begun to realize the utter dependence you have on His power. In Him, Doc |

3 | Thanks Doc, That was helpful. I don't kn | Matt 21:22 | SMO | 151912
Thanks Doc, That was helpful. I don't know the ways of the Lord, not well enough anyway. I think that is my main problem. I need to get closer to Him, to His heart. What i meant by His presence in my room while i pray, was His manifest presence. But again, God knows whats best; i dont doubt that, i just dont understand it. I'll continue to pray on it, but i cant help thinking about Jesus, and the disciples, and Paul etc... the miracles they performed (and the frequency)... how much more Godly must they be (Jesus obviously) than i am, and is it possible for me or ANYONE to be as close to God's heart as they. I've never met anyone that has been a vessel for God's Spirit to work miracles through like the new testament bible people. Is it just a matter of time? Of spending enough of my life following Christ and clothing myself in him? I've prayed to touch the heart of God, and im quite sure (as in the scriptures) that i can't achieve by works or good deeds... I think after all this thinking it boils down to this, 'i want more God, and i dont want to waste another second of my life without having as much of Him as possible'. I want a life were i can be like God's friend, talk to Him like He is my Father (which He certainly is), why do i have to wait for what God wants so badly with me? I know He loves me and His heart burns for me, we want the same thing there (my love for Him will never be as complete as His for me though). I want to dwell in His presence, in His glory. Im sorry if i offend anyone with what i say. Im pretty young, so i admit i need a lot more wisdom. Again, thanks for having the patience to read this. |

Hi, SMO... Good questions. Per the verse I gave in you Hebrews, we do and ought to make a concerted effort to seek Him. Immerse yourself in the Word, pray, worship with other beleivers who love the Word, and fellowship with other believers. You will see Him in the Scriptures. This "manifest presence" stuff is just experiential mystical babble. Let God take care of the miracles. In Him, Doc |
