1 | MJH, Why limit it to adding abuse only? | Matt 19:9 | DocTrinsograce | 144394
Dear Searcher, "Gill's trash?" I think I see some "obvious denominational bias" showing. Isn't there something about that in the forum guidelines? I wonder how many of our comments on Scripture are going to still be read three hundred years from now? I wonder how many of us will even ever write (let alone publish) a complete systematic theology and a verse-by-verse commentary of the Bible, while pastoring a church for 51 years? Dr. John Gill pastored the London church where he took the place of another great pastor, Benjamin Keach, and was followed by the "Prince of Preachers," Charles Hadon Spurgeon. He was considered a leading authority on ancient Jewish practices, and is still recognized as such. In order to prove your compliance with the forum guidelines, you must now explain Biblically how it is that Gill's writings are "trash." (1 Timothy 5:19) In Him, Doc PS For reference purposes, the guidelines state "Postings must be Biblically based. Posting must not be submitted as an effort foster debates, arguments, divisiveness, ill-will, dissension or disruptions to this forum." |

2 | Do you see Gill's view as Biblical? | Matt 19:9 | Searcher56 | 144451
DocT, I call it Gill’s trash because I think he adds to Scripture, as MJH cites below: By John Gill's Exposition of the entire Bible: Deut 24:1 "because he hath found some uncleanness in her;" "something that he disliked, and was disagreeable to him, and which made their continuance together in the marriage state very uncomfortable; which led him on to be very ill-natured, severe, and CRUEL to her; so that HER LIFE was exposed to danger, or at least become very uneasy; in which case a divorce was permitted, BOTH for the badness of the man's heart, and in favor of the woman, that she might be FREED from such rigorous usage." (CAPS are my additions). To link abuse, cruelty, danger … as grounds for divorce is not in my Bible. I don’t find this in the Bible ... do you? I don’t think I am better than Gill or anyone, but will, even must challenge even pastors, when I see there is error (Acts 17:11). What "obvious denominational bias" do you see? While I consider abuse wrongs, it is not grounds for divorce. Abuse has civil/criminal penalties. One may even say violating Ephesians 5:22-33 as grounds, since this deals directly with the husband and wife. |
