WHAT DID JESUS MEAN HERE? Mat 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. |

Hi, Josh... Welcome to the forum! Christ means that no matter how difficult, extreme, painful, or harsh any command of God might seem, nothing ought to be more precious to us than His justice. Everything else that we think is more valuable or more important reveals our enslavement to temporal things (i.e., things that will not last) rather than eternal things. By using hyperpole, our Lord reveals our foolishness for clinging to worthless things, rather than hanging on tightly to the treasure of our God. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Tedebear... Welcome to the forum! I would agree that the person creating a stumbling block ought to be the object of church discipline (Matthew 18:6-7). Some of the old Baptist divines in the 17th century (and probably others) considered church discipline to be an ordinance of our Lord based on this passage (see particularly vv14-20). Contemporary Christians tend to embrace the little children thing (vv3-5), with more enthusiasm than the self denial (vv8-9), let alone the church's exercise of discipline in the latter verses. The Puritans used to say, "Showing kindness to the wolf is showing cruelty to the sheep." In Him, Doc |
