1 | Dealing with conflict Matthew 18 in Q? | Matt 18:15 | confused christian | 166147
My question is that if you are having problems with someone, say you are a Youth teacher in your church. You talk to the 14 year old and express to him what you see to be the problem with his behavior in the class. After a few weeks of dealing still with the disrespect and misbehavior you and the other Youth Teachers and the child's parents talk, and still he will not follow the rules. Then the last option you see according to the Bible in Matthew 18 and the Youth Group Rules are to take the child before the church. You, and the other teachers do that in a very loving, forgiving, positive and compassionate way. The parents agreed for him to go before the church, the child agreed to go before the church. But, you have opposition from church members. What is the Biblical way according to scripture?

Dear confused christian, It sounds as though there may be a lot of problems in your church? This Forum is not necessarily the most appropriate avenue, but I'll do my best in giving some basic outlines. The most important lesson for the child to learn is that HE IS AN INDIVIDUAL UNDER AUTHORITY. He has been made by God and has a responsibility to obey God in all things (Eph. 6:1). In Matthew 18, Christ gives the steps of biblical discipline. The objectives of discipline are: To restore the offender to fellowship with God and the church (2 Cor. 2:5-11) To remove the leavening, the corrupt influence, from the presence of the other members of the congregation (1 Cor. 5:6-8, Titus 1:10-16) To correct doctrinal error (Titus 1:13) To prevent sin from spreading to other members of the aasembly and to challenge them unto godliness (Gal. 6:1, 1 Tim. 5:20) In the situation you describe, discipline is not a public matter to be "Voted" on, for or against the person who is under a charge and accusation. Discipline is carried out by the elders and must at first begin as discreet as possible. (which it sounds like it was) But if necessary, t must be brought before the church by the elders in order to let the congregation know that the elders (church leadership) are aware of the issues, and if necessary, in order to deal with it properly. Remember, getting things back on track is the goal of all discipline, not simply punishment. (Mal Couch/ A Pastor's Manual on Doing Church) My question would be: why is there opposition from some certain members and who are they? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
