I am concerned about the controversy that the church has brought about concerning the three days and three nights of Jesus being in the tomb. Many churches contend that Jesus was laid into the tomb on Friday evening, (Jewish days, from 6pm to 6pm) hopwever this would not include three nights. I believe in the literal 3 days and nights and contend that it was Thursday evening when Jesus was lain in the tomb. My question is, is ther any type of chart explaining the order in which the three days and three nights are explained. Jesus himself said he would be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. Matt:12:40. Also does John 19:31 give us a extra day before the Sabbath Day to show the necessity of the burial before Friday. |

Hello Eden's Fury, I tend to agree that the crucifixion was on Thursday because of the typology link to the Passover Lamb rather than this passage. But since your question pertained to this, I think the Lord was not speaking literally in his reference here to Jonah. Rather it appears the intent was to make a link to Jonah's "resurrection in picture" to his own actual resurrection to come later. Christ used the number of days as a rhetorical device to link the events. And I'm open to correction here. Steve |
