1 | Is Grace Still Amazing to Us? | Hab 3:18 | DocTrinsograce | 203031
"How can we recover the new affection for Christ and his kingdom that so powerfully impacted our life-long worldliness, and in which we crucified the flesh with its lusts? "What was it that created that first love in any case? Do you remember? It was our discovery of Christ’s grace in the realization of our own sin. We are not naturally capable of loving God for himself, indeed we hate him. But in discovering this about ourselves, and in learning of the Lord’s supernatural love for us, love for the Father was born. Forgiven much, we loved much. We rejoiced in the hope of glory, in suffering, even in God himself. This new affection seemed first to overtake our worldliness, then to master it. Spiritual realities -- Christ, grace, Scripture, prayer, fellowship, service, living for the glory of God -- filled our vision and seemed so large, so desirable that other things by comparison seemed to shrink in size and become bland to the taste. "The way in which we maintain ‘the expulsive power of a new affection’ is the same as the way we first discovered it. Only when grace is still ‘amazing’ to us does it retain its power in us. Only as we retain a sense of our own profound sinfulness can we retain a sense of the graciousness of grace." --Sinclair Ferguson |

2 | Is Grace Still Amazing to Us? | Hab 3:18 | refump | 203034
As I look back to the reason I invited Christ into my life as Lord and Savior at the age of 9 it is hard to remember what the motivation was. It seems it was dominated by the fear of going to hell not so much out of my appreciation for the love and grace of God. I understand as best I can understand the price He paid for my sin and that it was born out of His love for me. I understand GRACE more from an intellect than in my heart. I dont get emotional when I think of what Christ has done for me but I understand what he has done for me and accept it. I often wrestle with this and wonder why I don't have more of a "heart felt" appreciation for His grace. I know I only love Him because He first loved me but why doesn't the thought of His Grace, His ultimate sacrifice and payment of my debt of sin bring me to tears? I face this head on.I will continue to study His Word and seek Him for an answer.

Hi, refump... We are skilled at crafting idols, loving the things of this world more than the things of the next. By neglecting the Word of God, we become desensitized to our spiritual starvation. In our thinking we magnify ourselves, and diminish God. We surround ourselves with worldly people, to validate and conventionalize our fleshly choices. We pursue diversion, to assuage our conscience. We conveniently forget that a hard heart is not an experience, but a sin. The solution is to call out to God, confess this sin, and ask Him to pierce your hardened heart. You understand that you cannot change your own heart, but He can and will do this work (James 4:8-9). Be prepared, however, to be caught unprepared! When He does this thing, He will do it in such a way as to make it clear that it is His doing alone. In Him, Doc |
