1 | Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? | Ex 7:3 | Hiram Abiff | 8941
Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? It seems out of character for God to cause a behavior and then punish it. If Pharaoh was going to repeat his past behavior the hardening was not necessary, if he was really going to free the Israelites this action on God’s part kept them in captivity longer. Please don’t think I’m accusing God of meanness, I just can’t understand the motivation.
2 | Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? | Ex 7:3 | prayon | 8946
Good question Hiram! Upon God ultimately rests the responsibility for the well-being of some and the discomfuture of others, and He is well able to bear it. In Exo 33:19 God tells us that He "will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and show mercy to whom I will show mercy. This tells us specifically that He will not show mercy to all. The Pharaoh is cautioned at the outset as to the consequences of non-compliance with the divine command. In addition, Exo 8:15,32; 9:34 states that Pharaoh hardened his own heart. Hardening of the heart is the choice of man. Pharaoh freely chose a life of resisting God. Pharaoh was a greedy man. The Hebrews were free labor for the Pharaoh. He was not about to let such a great resource go. Even after he did say they were to go he changed his mind and went after them to bring them back (Exo 14:5). |

I was unaware of Ex 33:19. This puts a different perspective on things in general. Am I correct to interpret this to mean God will use a man as He pleases for the general good even if the results are not what we would see as being in our personal best interest?
4 | Re: Ex 33:19 | Ex 7:3 | Hank | 8952
Hiram, this verse (Exodus 33:19) is quoted by Paul in Romans 9:15 "in response," so says John MacArthur in his Study Bible, "to the accusation that such a teaching about God's sovereign election is inconsistent with His fairness. Paul cites this text from the Old Testament that clearly indicates that God is absolutely sovereign and does elect who will be saved without violating His other attributes. He determines who receives mercy." ..... But this is in no way seen as being inconsistent with "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." The election / free will debate is way over my head at this time. It is enough to know that He saved me regardless of whether He chose me or I came to Him of my own free will.
