2 | What does 'Mountain of God' mean? | Ex 3:1 | EdB | 112543
Horeb. An alternative name for Mt. Sinai (cf. 19:11; Deut. 4:10). Traditionally, this mountain has been identified with Jebel Musa, “the mountain of Moses.” “Horeb” is the Heb. for the non-Semitic place-name, Sinai, located in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula. the mountain of God. This is known as such because of what took place there later in Israel’s history. This name for the mountain suggests that the book of Exodus was written by Moses after the events at Sinai. Others suggest that it was already known as a sacred mountain prior to the call of Moses; but it seems best to relate the name to what God did for Israel there. MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). Thank you for your time. I don't, however, agree with that idea. I'm sorry...first of all, Mt. Sinai (as we have named it or recognize it as it was named by Constantine) is in Egypt and was then. If God led Israel "out of Egypt" that presents problems. I believe that you can follow the text to find Horeb/Mt. Sinai in Arabia as Paul referenced. (You can see more on this argument at www.baseinstitute.org) But...I think that there may be more to it. I'm just trying to figure it out. THANK YOU!

coavrl1 Then your question isn't, "Mountain of God...what is this talking about? Was this known as a place where God met people or people worshiped God or did Moses name it later?" But rather your question or post should say, "let us argue over where Mt Horeb is." Since the Bible does not give us a detailed location it could be anywhere in the area. If BASE is right and it is what is known today as Jabal al Lawz which is about 75 miles to the east so what? It really changes nothing in the Exodus account. I'm sorry I answered your original question. EdB |
