Hi, Heizlrd... Yes, God as part of salvation sets us apart, sanctifying us. And, yes, we grow in holiness by conforming to the image of the Son. Scripture even states, "Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord." (Hebrews 12:14) Peter further describes the believer, "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins." (2 Peter 1:2-9) So, you see, we are fully equipped! But at the same time, we are called to strive for godliness as well! There are many aspects of the Christian life that seem contradictory this way. (The technical word for them is "antinomy.") Don't worry about the Jewish ways that they set things apart for the Lord. The Old Testament is valuable, but it must be understood in the light of the New Testament. I suggest that you just start immersing yourself in the Word. If you read three chapters a day, you can read through the gospels every month. Then start pouring over the Epistles. Ephesians is a good one. Listen to the Word on tape while you drive. Listen to sermons. Attend good Bible studies. Another good thing might be to take one of the courses at www.settingcaptivesfree.com. They have a new one called "Finding Life Jesus' Death. They are free, and extremely well done! The tools that God has given us to grow in sanctification include: prayer, Bible study, and fellowship with the saints. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2) In Him, Doc |
