Dear mamametal, God is very explicit about what is and what isn't a capital crime. This particular verse is not necessarily talking about literally taking a life for a life - it would depend on the circumstances of the cause of the death. If one is to take that verse completely literally, then one would also have to take the others literally. Except in one particular instance, God has NEVER advocated the maiming of another in retribution. Just imagine 2 men who have been in a brawl and Abe loses a tooth. For retribution Abe now gets to pound Joe in the face till the very same tooth of his gets knocked out. What if it's a different tooth, one more needful, or not as important? What if another tooth gets loosened? Can Joe now punch Abe to loosen his tooth also? See how ridiculous that would be? Those verses simply mean, have the recompence or punishment meet the crime without partiality. |
