1 | What does the Bible say about gambling? | Ex 20:17 | humility | 214694 | ||
Dear John, I'm gonna need more help than that because there are lots of games I play with my friends, and the whole point of us playing is to win the crown. Automatically someone has to win and someone has to lose! Games such as racing, swimming, basketball, etc. |

Hi humility, Gambling and playing a game where there is no wagering of money or something of substance are, two deferent things. When you lose at a game, you really haven't lost anything but the game itself, and, perhaps, a little of your pride. But when you gamble, someone has to lose some of their money or something of value or substance. (Nor is this the same as casting lots; in gambling, they lose, something they actually owned in the first place -no one loses something they previously owned in casting lots) Gambling does not really show Christian love by taking something form someone without actually earning it. It is an unjust gain. You might say that they are doing this willingly, but that doesn't change the facts. Someone wins something of substance and someone loses something of substance. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Love your neighbor as yourself. Do you like to lose at gambling? Also given the facts about gambling- Brad made a very good point! Most people know that the odds are way out of their favor and the odds are they will lose. We know when we gamble we will probably lose, so its like throwing money away, and after all, it's all God's money in the first place. We could, and should, put that money to better use. John |
