1 | Lied to and deceived | Ex 20:16 | Mamabyrd001 | 120302
Someone in our on-line Bible study group lied about a serious illness from which (we were told) she died in October 2003. Now she's back and is saying it was all a "misunderstanding". She then sent us a bogas newspaper clipping (scanned into her computer) that stated it was all a mistake. That e-mail had a virus attached that MSN detected and deleted from 1 participants PC; my anti-virus detector found it and quarateed it. The one who did open it told the rest of us what it was and what it said. I can't begin to put into words what we're feeling toward this person. As originator of this Bible study group, I am responsible for handling 'sticky' situations; the participants want this person kicked out of the study or they will leave. I know I need to handle this as a one-on-one with her and, 1 way or another, in a loving manner. Can anyone give me scripture justifying asking her to leave the group? Thanks for your time and assistance. God bless you and yours. Mamabyrd |

2 | Lied to and deceived | Ex 20:16 | Hank | 120303
Well, at least consider yourself fortunate that she didn't claim reincarnation! There is a difference between lying and a "misunderstanding" of course; a "misunderstanding" is not what the Ninth Commandment is about. If this person has lied to the group and engaged in modern poison pen warfare (e-mail virus), it seems to me you have both the right and responsibility as the leader of your Bible study group to bring this person to account, to get to the truth of the matter and, if necessary for the welfare of the group, to exclude her from future participation. There are scriptural guidelines for discipline in the church, but an on-line Bible study group is not the church. You and your group may be enriched by a review of Jesus' teachings on personal relationships in His "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5-7). Praying for this person and for the wisdom of the group to make the right decisions yourselves clearly is in order in this situation. May God bless and guide your Bible study group, and may He through your labors be glorified. --Hank
