Hi smwatkin, Question: "Are children punished for the sins of their parents?" Answer: Ezekiel 18:20 tells us, “The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.” Exodus 20:5 declares, "You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me." Do these Scriptures contradict each other? The difference between Ezekiel 18:20 and Exodus 20:5 is that while Exodus 20:5 is speaking of consequences, Ezekiel 18:20 is speaking of punishment. Exodus 20:5 is saying that the consequences of a man’s sins can be felt generations later. Ezekiel 18:20 is saying that sons should not be punished for their father’s sins. God does not hold us accountable for the sins of our parents, but we sometimes suffer as a result of the sins our parents committed. http://www.gotquestions.org/parents-sin.html Copyright 2002-2005 Got Questions Ministries.
