:-) Somehow I doubt that. At least you didn't answer the way I expected! "Dunno." :-) |

Doc, President Calvin Coolidge was renowned for his economy of language. Once a social butterfly, upon discovering that she had been assigned a seat next to the President at a Washington gala dinner party, boasted to a friend, "I'll bet you I can get President Coolidge to say more than two words to me." Later after she took her set next to the President, she said to him, "Mr. President, I have a bet with a friend that I can get you to say more than two words to me this evening." Coolidge smiled, and leaning toward her, whispered in her ear, "You lose." ..... Who among us could not profit by this lesson on brevity from "Silent Cal"? --Hank

That would be a good story to help define the word "laconic!" Thank you for sharing it! The pleonastic Polonius would have done well with this lesson when Shakespeare had him say, "Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice." :-) And lest I cause us to stray entirely away from our Bible study: "Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be vindicated? Should your empty talk make men hold their peace?" (Job 11:2-3a) For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God. (Ecclesiastes 5:7a) |

Doc: "Pleonastic Polonius?" You outdo yourself! I'd bet that even Demosthenes couldn't say 'pleonastic Polonius' 10 times with his mouth stuffed full of pebbles -- or without the pebbles either, for that matter. --Hank .... P.S. I had in mind to add a few more lines, but I've expressed my feeble thought pleonastically enough as it is.
