drapngflwr, Conjugal love between a husband and wife is meant to be both unitive and procreative. Sexual relations between a husband and wife are ordered by God to the good of the couple confirmed in pleasure and the transmission of life. Each and every act may not necessarily achieve both ends, but neither end should be intentionally impeded by unnatural (artificial) means. For example, a woman is only fertile for perhaps two days in each cycle. A couple is not under any obligation to have sexual relations only on those two days. They are free to enjoy each other with consent on any day. On the other hand, neither are they forbidden, when for good reason, whether health, physical, psycholgical, economic, to avoid sexual relations on those few days when conception may take place. They are free to abstain and thereby regulate conception in a manner that respects the dignity of the body and nature as God created us. This is the essence of Natural Family Planning of NFP. The couple acts within the norms of God's creation respecting how He created us and does not treat fertility like a disease to be cured with medicine or mechanical devices or surgery. Fertility is the natural state of the healthy man and woman of child bearing age. It is infertility that require medical help, not fertiltiy. If I wish to avoid obesity and I do not suffer from some metabolic disease, it is more natural to abtsain form food for a period or eat less frequently rather than have my lips surgically sealed or my stomach stapled, or take amphetamines which kill my natural appetite and prevent me from normal nourishment. The same logic applies in the realm of fertility. We honor our bodies and their natural conditions and cycles and at the same time we can exercise responsible restarint to achieve legitimate goals of regulating the size of our families when necessary for legitimate reasons. Thank you Emmaus. How simple it is. Sometimes I overthink too much, when I should just hand it over to God. | ||||||
