1 | Horns of the Altar | Jer 17:1 | Rainbow Maker | 38426 | ||
And Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, and he arose, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. The Horns of the Altar are the four corners of the altar of burnt sacrifices or holocausts. According to the New Jerome Biblical Commentary, Prentis Hall,1968,1990 page 163 inorder for Adonijah to claim assylum he actually needed to lay hold of the Horns of the Altar, it was not sufficient just to be inside the Temple. Binding the Festival sacrifice to the Horns of the Altar is symbolic of Jesus Christ only when the sacrifice is a perfect Lamb without blemish for such was the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. The sacrifice of Jesus, the perfect Lamb was to replace all further blood sacrifices and so when we read of the altar of holocausts we look forward to the time of that perfect sacrifice which brought an end, for those who accept it, claim it, to death for sin.
